Edwyn Collins: Doctor Syntax LP (vinyl)
For the first time on vinyl!
Edwyn's original press release and track by track account from back in the day:
DOCTOR SYNTAX
This is my Vth album recorded over a period of 3 years, starting in late '98, and finishing in the winter of 2001.
The title was cribbed from an early 19th century satirical book: "The Tour of Doctor Syntax" which my Granny gave me on a whim. As usual the album is a collaboration between myself and Sebastian Lewsley (engineering and programming) and features Paul Cook on 2 tracks playing his drums. All other instruments were played by myself and tarted up by Sebastian.
Track by Track
1 .I Never Felt Like This
An attempt to update the Chi-lites "It's Time For Love."
2. Should've Done That
A node to Prince in this tale of woe.
3. Mine Is At
Partially inspired whilst watching M.T.V. (not advisable.) A young Californian amateur film maker was describing her M.O.: "This Is Where Mine Is At." I thought, that's an odd use of English.
4. No Idea
Musically, the early Sugarhill sound meets cod psychedelia Lyrically - what if one took Dr Leary's advice to "turn off your mind." Literally! Hence "you're numb to everything and everyone, you've no idea.."
5. The Beatles
The story of The Beatles compressed into 4 minutes.
6. Back To The Backroom
"Cool Britannia," wherefore art thou?
7. Splitting Up
Schizophrenic number, both musically and figuratively.
8. Johnny Teardrop
"Poor Old Johnny Ray.........." Again.
9. 20 Years Too Late
Disco meets talking blues.
10. Funny Thing
Started life as a drum programme on an oberheim D.M.X. (proto hip hop drum machine,) and turned into a monster.
11. Calling On You
We were testing out a new digital recording system and this was the result.
An Analogue Enhanced Digital Recording
